Sett Protection

South Yorkshire Badger Group are constantly aware of the need to protect Badger Setts in the area.

Having located a sett that had been dug by Badger baiters, first we remove the top soil to about two feet down around the area of the sett. This is done with a JCB or in cases where its not possibly to gain access by spades and picks. This can be seen in photo 1.

After removal of the top soil the site is covered with steel mesh as big as 16 foot by 8 foot. This will make things harder for anyone to dig though to the tunnels and chamber below. (photo 2)

The area is recovered and all entrances cleaned out.

Other work carried out by SYBG is to build artificial setts. (photo 3)

This work is done for many reasons;-

  • to relocate badgers, orphaned cubs, and RTA's victims or other sick badgers where placing them back where they came from could result in the badgers receiving the same fate.

  • to re-house badger where setts have been flooded or built in unwanted areas. (photo 4) a sett has been built by badgers under a train line.

  • or just to give the badgers a safe home to live in.

SYBG also have a purpose built unit where badgers can be looked after prior to being released back into the wild. (photo 5)

We look after orphaned cubs, RTA's and other injured badgers bought to us from the public, police and RSPCA.
